Acupuncture, Chronic Pain, and the Opioid Crisis
Two components of the opioid crisis are over prescription of opioid medications for chronic pain and addiction due to recreational use. Because of this, as of Jan. 1, 2018, non-pharmacological pain treatment modalities are required for all hospitals to be accredited by the Joint Commission. Recent studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective in reducing chronic pain and pain medication use, as well as opioid addiction treatment.
