Sock Darning Workshop & Clothing Swap Party!

Socks & Swaps: Sunday 3/15

10-11:30am: Sock Darning w/ Josie Carothers
11:30am-1pm Clothing Swap Party w/ Shelby & Elena

@ BALE commons

A mid-winter’s daydream — come learn and practice Sock Darning with Josie and stay to make new friends at our Clothing Swap party!

Anyone can darn their own wool socks and even sweaters! It's so easy, even Josie can do it. And even teach it to you! The secret is the lack of perfectionism: your item can be repaired to good workable condition.
Needles and yarn will be provided to use at the workshop. If she has enough, you can take the needle home and some yarn, too. You'll leave this workshop with a finished or close-to-finish item. This workshop is relaxed and enjoyable!

Clothing Swap party: bring up to 10 items in good condition to swap and come prepared to find some new threads while you make new friends! Unswapped items will be donated to the BALE Free Store so no need to take them back home.
RSVP for the workshop

Hoodwinked: Rights of Nature Symposium

Saturday March 14th 9am - 1pm – Rights of Nature symposium at Multicultural Center at Vermont Law & Graduate School.

Co-sponsored by BALE, the Environmental Justice Law Society and the Energy Law Society will host a series of discussions called the Hoodwinked Series. This series will highlight current environmental justice and energy issues, led by distinguished scholars in the field.

Our third panel will focus on the Rights of Nature, a new movement leading to the recognition that all entities within our ecosystem deserve rights. We will have one keynote speaker, Tom Linzey, and one panel with 6 experts in the field: Tom Linzey, Earl Hatley, Emily Boles, John Moody, Rebecca Jim, and Juliana Arnold.

Our speakers will discuss the shift towards granting non-human entities legal personhood status, reimagining how guardians can protect the environment. This movement is deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions and has become implemented by many members of the global community. We aim to discuss how the Rights of Nature movement may start to find a foothold close to home.

We will provide ample time for questions and mingling. EGLS will provide breakfast.

This Panel will focus on Ratepayer Protection, led by Jim Dumont, Debbie New, and Mieke Riddlebarger. Protecting customers is crucial, especially when electricity prices are increasing so drastically. At our panel, we will discuss the policies and agreements designed to shield utility customers from unfair, rapid, and excessive increases to these bills. We hope to find a world that ensures energy affordability, customer sustainability, and the shift towards green energy sources.

We will provide ample time for questions and mingling.
